Creating Your Wedding Vows

One of the most memorable moments a couple can create on their wedding day is the moment they turn to face each other to share all the promises and love they have in front of their friends and family. However, it’s the part leading up to this moment that has brides and grooms everywhere getting on their computer and googling some inspiration for creating their wedding vows. If this sounds like you, then read on!

Three Questions

Before you begin to find inspiration you should ask yourself these three questions when creating your wedding vows.

 1.  Traditional vs Personalized

This question helps you to narrow down your own wedding vow inspiration search and create the atmosphere you’d like at your wedding ceremony. You can always do the traditional “I blank take thee blank” or you can always create and personalize your own vows. It may sound scary to think about having to write and share your created vows but it may be easier than you think when you allow yourself to be guided by the love you have for your fiance. No matter which you choose your vows will always be special because they are the promises you make to each other from the heart.

2. Funny or Sentimental, both?

This question can be discussed with your fiance as a way to keep the tone throughout the ceremony similar. You may also think about your guests – if you want to be either one try to stay away from inside jokes or stories that your guests may not understand. Of course, your fiance should be the main focus of our wedding vows. However,  don’t forget that your guests have come to celebrate you and should understand some, if not all, of your vows to each other as you are allowing them to witness and be present for this special occasion.

 3. How long do I want my wedding vows to be?

When answering this question, keep in mind not only your fiance but also your audience. Do you want to have a long or short ceremony? Do you want your guests to be sitting listening for awhile or do you want to go straight into a reception, as quickly as, possible? Think about your venue and overall wedding timeline. The length of your wedding vows should and can be discussed with your fiance to make sure you’re both on the same page!

Once you have answered these questions its time to create your wedding vows. First things first.

Try to avoid looking or listening to other vows for inspiration

As tempting as it sounds it may influence the way you create your vows by changing your written voice.  Your fiance chose to marry YOU, so be confident in making sure that you don’t change your own voice when writing down your vows. Remain genuine and write the way you speak. You have your own way of expressing yourself and its important that you share your love on your ceremony the way you will continue to do so for the rest of your lives – in your own voice and in your own way.

Write it down

Not sure where to begin? Start by writing down every little thing you love about your fiance. Every little moment you’ve had with them. The good and the bad. Everything you can possibly think about when it comes to your fiance. Do they like peanut butter? Write it down. It doesn’t matter how insignificant it may seem just write it all down! It may even help to have someone write it down for you, as you say it out loud to them. Ask yourself questions like “what challenges have you’ve gone through” or “when was the moment you knew you wanted to marry them.” Once you’ve done that go back and look at the list. Pick out the moments, characteristics, jokes, etc that jump out to you first. These moments and characteristics you’ve chosen is how you’ll be able to express and create your wedding vows by elaborating on them and sharing the reasons why they jumped out to you in the first place.

I Promise

You’ve created the parts to express the reasons you love your fiance but now it is time to add the promises and the future into your vows. You can do so by adding the promises you intend to keep or the promises you want to make with them. Think about the future. Add in any reference, plans, moments you promise to be there for or have with them. Think about any future family plans and make a promise to them. Anything can be included when it comes to the future because you and your fiance will be the ones who create it together.

The Hardships

Just like the promises you make to your fiance remember to comfort them and remind them about your support and your role to be there for them for the hardships you may be facing now and the ones you will face in the future. Don’t be shy to truly express how much your new role as a Wife or a Husband means that you are coming together as one and how you both will be able to handle whatever comes your way.

I Love You

Although you may think you won’t forget it, couples forget to say I love you in their wedding vows quite often so make sure to add the line before you forget too!

Make a Copy

Once you’re done do not forget to make a clean copy – maybe two – and give them to someone who will keep them safe until it is time to read them or keep them with you. As long as they are safe.

When it comes to creating your wedding vows don’t be afraid to be cliche, be sappy, be funny, be everything you need to be to express your emotions, strength as a couple, promises, and future together when it comes to your wedding vows.

Working with Lindsey and the Lesner Inn was great! I planned the majority of my wedding from out of town and Lindsey could not have been more patient with my constant emails. The venue looked beautiful at the reception and my guests loved the views and the food. The crab cakes were everyone’s favorite. Thank you so much to the Lesner Inn team and & Lindsey for such a beautiful wedding!

The ceremony and receptions spaces were absolutely beautiful. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn’t change a thing and I would recommend this venue to anyone!
