Wedding Style

Before anything else, you must define your wedding style. Is it classy, casual, glam, modern, traditional, rustic or do you just not have one? If you do, then try to stay within the patterns, colors, and typography associated with the style. If you do not have one, then no need to worry as you can always go with your wedding colors, patterns, or symbolic meaning you’ve incorporated into your wedding. A great way to figure out and define your style is by creating a Pinterest board to look back on for reference or for inspiration.

Shape & Size 

Once you have decided on your wedding style the next step is to think about the shape and size of your invitation. Traditionally, a wedding invitation suite includes the following: the outer envelope, the inner envelope with the main invitation inside, a response card with a posted envelope, and any other card that may contain helpful information, such as travel and sleep accommodations, attire card, and a belly band to keep it all together. Keep this in mind as you decide on how big you would like the suite to be as well as the amount of postage you would like to spend on doing so. If you are on a budget you may want to keep your suite small and only include the most basic information needed, such as the main invitation and response card with the appropriate envelopes included or you can always opt to send out the main invitation with a virtual RSVP link to your wedding website.

Paper & Texture

Style, shape, and size is all figured out. Now it’s time to figure out the type of paper and feeling you would like your guests to experience. There are many types of wedding papers, such as the traditional and popular vellum paper as well as those like parchment, marbled, mylar, matte, glossy, etc. Once you have chosen a type of paper think about any other customizing factors that can match your wedding style – for example, if you have a rustic wedding style then maybe fraying the edges or adding a heavily textured lace can give it more of a rustic feel and look to your guests when they first open and look at it.

Fun Fact: As of 2019, acrylic has become one of the most popular and heavily trending type of wedding invitation styles due to its sleek and clean look.

Typography 

Deciding on the type of typography is a great way to personalize your wedding suite. Keeping in mind your wedding style go ahead and play around with the types of typography, sizes, and do not be afraid to mix fonts. However, if you do decide to mix around fonts try to stay around 2-3 different ones as any more is overwhelming and reads to heavy.

Quick Tip: The type of typography you use can also be an indicator to the type of attire you would like your guests to wear. If the typography is casual looking than your guests are more likely to dress down versus an elegant typography indicating more of an evening type attire.

Illustrations & Colors

Adding an illustration is a great way to personalize your wedding suite! Be it adding a watercolor version of your venue to the edge of your envelope or a thematic motif/symbol that represents you and your partner on the top part of the main invitation allows you to express not only you but you can continue this small theme throughout the wedding! You could also add some floral or greenery illustrations onto the card for an eye catching design. While thinking about potentially adding a bit of illustration you can also think about adding some color. There are many ways to add color, such as doing your envelopes one solid color and the cards remaining neutral or vice versa. Think about potentially adding color through your fonts such as your names being the color of your bridesmaids dresses!

Quick Tip: When deciding on colors try to coordinate or associate them with a main color instead of a highlight color that you have chosen for your wedding. For example: if your bouquet is dominantly red with a bit of orange, yellow and greenery, then make your red be the associated color with your wedding suite.

Add Ons

Once you are done with creating your suite look its time to finish it off with an add on. Some great ways to personalize and create that extra element to your invitation suite can include using a wax seal that contains your family crescent, soon to be initials, wedding symbol, etc. You can also use a ribbon, twine, or any other wrap that goes with your wedding style to seal your envelopes and add that extra flair!
